- Noncancerous enlargement of the thyroid or Goiter – In this case, there can be an alternative between removing the entire thyroid gland or only a part of it. The choice is made depending on the size of the goitre and its related symptoms.
- Overactive thyroid or hyperthyroidism - Hyperthyroidism refers to a condition wherein your thyroid gland produces too much thyroxine, a type of hormone.
- Graves’ disease - Hyperthyroidism is mainly caused due to an immunological abnormality called Graves’ disease, which leads the body to misread the thyroid gland as an unknown body and send antibodies to attack it. These antibodies, in turn, inflame the thyroid, leading to hormone overproduction.
- Indeterminate or suspicious thyroid nodules – In certain cases, it cannot be determined if the thyroid nodules present are cancerous with the help of a needle biopsy. If that is the case with you, the doctors may recommend that you undergo thyroid surgery if the nodules showcase an increased risk of being cancerous.
